Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is a 2018 jukebox musical romantic one-act film written and directed by Ol Parker, from a story by Parker, Catherine Johnson, and Richard Curtis. It is a follow-upwardly to the 2008 film Mamma Mia!, which in turn is based on the musical of the same name using the music of ABBA. The flick features an ensemble cast, including Dominic Cooper, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Jeremy Irvine, Josh Dylan, Hugh Skinner, Lily James, Jessica Keenan Wynn, Alexa Davies, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Andy García, Meryl Streep, and Cher. Both a prequel and a sequel, the plot is set up after the events of the previous film, and is intersected with flashbacks to Donna's youth in 1979, with some scenes from the two time periods mirroring each other.

Due to the financial success of the first film, Universal Pictures had long been interested in a sequel. The picture show was officially announced in May 2017, with Parker hired to write and direct. In June 2017, many of the original cast confirmed their involvement, with James being bandage in the office of Young Donna that July. Filming took place from Baronial to December 2017 in Croatia (most prominently Vis), Bordeaux, Stockholm, Oxford, Hampton and at Shepperton Studios. A British and American joint venture, the flick was co-produced by Playtone, Littlestar Productions and Legendary Entertainment.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again was premiered at the Hammersmith Apollo in London on July 16, 2018, and was released in the U.k. and the United States on July 20, 2018, ten years to the week afterwards its predecessor'southward release, in both standard and IMAX formats.[five] The movie was a box role success, grossing $402 meg worldwide and received generally positive reviews, equally an improvement over its predecessor with critics praising the performances and musical numbers.[6] [7]

In a flashback to 1979, a immature Donna Sheridan graduates from Oxford's New College with Rosie and Tanya ("When I Kissed the Instructor"), and dreams of a Greek island named Kalokairi. Donna'southward mother, Ruby, is a famous singer; but she has a strained relationship with her girl and is consistently abroad on tour, and does not attend the graduation. Fed up with her mother'south abiding negligence and determined to spend her life making memories, Donna decided to travel to Kalokairi to notice her destiny.

In the nowadays, five years after the events of the first pic, Sophie is in Kalokairi preparing for the grand reopening of the Hotel Bella Donna, in honour of her recently deceased female parent. Harry and Neb are unable to nourish due to overseas business organisation ventures and Sophie likewise feels estranged from her husband, Sky, who's been offered a permanent job in New York ("One of Us").

Meanwhile, Bill, Harry, and Sky leave their ventures away to back up Sophie simply are told there are no boats to Kalokairi. However, a much older Alexio recognises Pecker and offers the trio safe boat passage to the island as gratitude for saving his relationship. Pecker convinces the others to bring together them for a party on Kalokairi. When the guests get in ("Dancing Queen"), Beak and Rosie rapidly reunite over their common grief over Donna's death, and Sophie reveals to Sky that she is pregnant, and she has never felt closer to her mother.

The celebration is of a sudden disrupted when Ruby arrives, despite Sophie having decided to not invite her. Ruby explains that Sky tracked her downwardly in New York, and she wants to build a true human relationship with her granddaughter. Sophie and so performs with the Dynamos in honor of Donna ("I've Been Waiting for You"), much to the pride of Ruby-red, who expresses slight but sincere grief over her daughter'southward death. It is so revealed that the hotel director, Señor Fernando Cienfuegos, is really Ruby'due south long-lost lover from 1959, and the two are joyously reunited ("Fernando").

Ix months afterward, Sophie has given birth to a baby male child, named Donny. At the christening, Donna's spirit proudly watches over her girl every bit the two of them have one last moment before Donna fully passes on ("My Dear, My Life"). Mamma Mia! Hither Nosotros Get Again was announced on May 19, 2017, with a release date of July 20, 2018.[10] Information technology was written and directed by Ol Parker.[11] On September 27, 2017, Benny Andersson confirmed three ABBA songs that would be featured in the flick: "When I Kissed the Teacher," "I Wonder (Departure)," and "Angeleyes."[12] "I Wonder (Departure)" was cut from the film, but is included on the soundtrack anthology.

Casting [edit]

On June ane, 2017, information technology was announced that Seyfried would return as Sophie.[13] Later that month, Dominic Cooper confirmed that he would return for the sequel, along with Streep, Firth and Brosnan as Sky, Donna, Harry, and Sam, respectively.[xiv] In July 2017, Baranski was also confirmed to return equally Tanya.[fifteen] On July 12, 2017, Lily James was cast to play the role of young Donna.[16] On August 3, 2017, Jeremy Irvine and Alexa Davies were as well cast in the film, with Irvine playing Brosnan's character Sam in a past era, and Hugh Skinner to play Young Harry, Davies equally a young Rosie, played past Julie Walters.[17] On August 16, 2017, it was announced that Jessica Keenan Wynn had been cast as a young Tanya, who is played by Baranski.[eighteen] Julie Walters and Stellan Skarsgård also reprised their roles every bit Rosie and Neb, respectively.[19] On Oct 16, 2017, it was announced that singer and extra Cher had joined the bandage, in her first on-screen picture show role since 2010. Mamma Mia! Here Nosotros Get Over again grossed $120.6 million in the United states and Canada, and $281.6 million in other territories, for a total worldwide gross of $402.iii million, against a production budget of $75 million.[4]

Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian termed the sequel as "weirdly irresistible" and gave it three out of five stars. He described his reaction to the first film equally "a combination of hives and bubonic plague," but concedes that this time, the relentlessness and greater self-aware comedy made him smile. He concludes: "More enjoyable than I idea. But please. Enough now."[48] Mark Kermode of The Observer gave the flick five stars and commented, "This slick sequel delivers sharp i-liners, joyously contrived plot twists and an emotional punch that left our critic reeling."[49]

Peter Travers of Rolling Stone awarded the film two and a half stars out of v, noting the absence of Streep for the majority of the motion picture hindered his enjoyment, and maxim, "her absence is deeply felt since the three-time Oscar winner sang and danced her centre out as Donna Sheridan".[50] Lindsay Bahr of Associated Press awarded the movie three out of four stars, calling it "wholly ridiculous", merely complimenting its self-awareness. She also praised James' operation and singing talent.[51] Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the sequel a mixed review, application it two stars out of four, criticizing the reprises of "Dancing Queen" and "Super Trouper" as bromidic, and feeling that some of the musical numbers dragged the pacing. He considered the younger counterparts to the principal characters "energetic" and "likeable."[52] Stephanie Zacharek of Fourth dimension gave the picture a mixed review, writing "Mamma Mia! Hither We Go Again is atrocious. And wonderful. It'southward all the reasons you should never get to the movies. And all the reasons you lot should race to go a ticket."[53]

Sequel [edit]

In June 2020, Judy Craymer announced that a third motion picture is in development, with the producer confirming that some of the new ABBA songs written for the ring's reunion could characteristic in the soundtrack, although stating that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused delays with development of the project.[54]
